Do You Need Extra Protection?

A dental sealant is an effective tool used in the practice of preventive dentistry. The sealant comes in the form of a thin plastic coating that is applied to the surface of the back molars since those are the teeth that do most of the chewing. The molars are designed with a rough surface that makes their job easier but all those nooks and crannies also present a greater risk for food particles to settle in. If the bacterial debris isn’t thoroughly washed away on a daily basis it can lead to tooth decay.

Because children are so susceptible to cavities family dentists and pediatric specialists often recommend that they have sealants put on for extra added protection from infection. Dentists usually like to wait for the permanent teeth to come in but if the baby teeth are particularly vulnerable they can be treated as well.

Dental sealants aren’t reserved only for children, adults can also benefit from the additional protection. They are not recommended, however, for teeth that have been filled or that already have been infected by decay.

Sealants are easy to apply, the material is literally painted onto the clean, dry surface of the tooth and allowed to bond. Once in place, a sealant can last for several years and can be reapplied if necessary.

Ask your dentist if you or your children might be good candidates for a dental sealant. The Dentistry Place is conveniently located in the Wash Park area of Denver. Call today @ 303-974-5533.
